Midwinter Light
What you need to know to force bulbs indoors.
Forcing narcissus (otherwise known as paperwhites) indoors is one of the easiest and most rewarding winter rituals. They bring life, fragrance, and light into the darker months. Here’s practical guide to help you succeed at this beautiful tradition.
SOURCE - Narcissus are already sold out in many catalogs but they are still available. As of the time of posting, they were available here at John Scheepers. (next year I am setting a reminder to order in September) .
VESSEL - You will need pebbles or stones for the base of your vase or container. I prefer very small black stones and am always on the search for the perfect size and shape. I have found mine in person at The Gardener in Berkeley.
NESTLE & VESSEL - Place the bulbs pointed end up, snug together (they like company). Leave the tops exposed. Add water just until it touches the bulbs. Make sure that the water is not covering them. If they get too much water they rot.
TIP - As the blooms grow they will reach for the light. Rotate the container every few days to help the stems grow straight.
TIP - If the stems get too unruly, use string to draw them together and gather them in a tidy way.
TIP - When done, compost the bulbs. You rarely can get a second bloom from them.
I am purchasing my bulbs this evening and encourage you to do this, as well. Please share with me if you do.
Love,
Natalie
